Celebrate with More Than Pizza!

Here at Elevate Student Health, we’re working to improve the health of Oklahoma youth. That includes supporting teachers and school staff to think through ways to support their students’ health.

As we work with schools on their wellness policies, one of the areas that can require some creative thinking is Elevate Student Health’s request for schools to have non-food celebrations. Let’s face it: celebrations and food go together like peas and carrots! Someone has a birthday? Throw a pizza party! A student behaves well? Give them a piece of candy! While that one piece of pizza or candy isn’t going to ruin someone’s health for good, it’s subconsciously teaching our children that because it’s a reward, unhealthy food is actually a good thing, creating just the type of linkage we’re trying to avoid. And when students spend about half of their time during developmentally critical years on a school campus, the habits they pick up at school will likely carry into adulthood. Similarly, we should never withhold food or physical activity as punishment. This can negatively impact our students’ wellness, and actually make behavior worsen.

When we get creative, there are PLENTY of other ways to reward students. You could let students choose a prize like a pencil or sticker, reward them with some movement like a dance party or extra recess, change up the routine by giving a “no homework pass” or a special themed dress-up day, or you can give special recognition like an award, shout-out on morning announcements, or even a call home to parents. Any other ideas? Feel free to send them info@ElevateStudentHealth for inclusion in our resources! Together, we can elevate the health of Oklahoma youth.
