Voices of Change

Hello, my name is Hope Hodson. I attend Sperry High School and I am in the 10th grade. I am also on the YAHL Leadership Team!

At the beginning of my second semester, I did a principal meeting for Elevate Student Health with Hallie, another member of the YAHL program. At our school, we did not have clean drinking water. The filter light on our water fountain was always lit up red, indicating that the filter needed service. This was something that we were able to bring to our principal’s attention during our meeting, and he changed the filters the next week.

I believe others should care if they are drinking clean water and making sure they are eating healthy foods. In Oklahoma, the obesity rate is ranked fourth in the nation. The goal of the Elevate Student Health campaign is to make sure everyone has access to P.E., healthy food options, and clean drinking water in schools. Being a part of the campaign allows me to work to improve these things at my school. What I hope to work on in the future is getting healthier food options in the school vending machine.
