Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies

Did you know that nearly 17% of Oklahoma children are overweight or obese? My name is De’Marien Harrison, a sophomore at Atoka High School who is passionate about improving student health through Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL). As someone interested in a future career in healthcare, I have seen how poor nutrition and lack of physical activity can affect people’s lives. That’s why I want to help create healthier lifestyles for students in my school and community.

Every student deserves access to nutritious food and opportunities to stay active throughout the school day. This issue impacts more than just physical health. Students who struggle with their health may also face challenges with energy, confidence, school attendance, and academic performance. If we do not address these concerns now many young people may continue to face preventable health problems in the future.

Elevate Student Health works alongside school leaders to promote healthier school environments for students. By meeting with principals, administrators and other school officials, we can identify ways to strengthen wellness policies and connect schools with resources that support student health.

I have already taken the first step by meeting with my school principal to discuss student wellness and explore ways we can make a positive impact. This conversation allowed us to share ideas and discuss how healthier school environments can support students and the entire school community.

Improving student health is an investment in our future. The habits students develop today can last a lifetime. Together, we can create school environments that encourage healthy choices, active lifestyles and long-term success for every student.
